PRS Journal Club

With every issue of the number-one medical journal in the field of plastic surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Editor-in-Chief and our annually-appointed Resident Ambassadors to the Editorial Board select three “Journal Club” articles. In the #PRSJournalClub podcast, the Resident Ambassadors and a special guest expert discuss the three Journal Club picks in the context of all relevant background material and with special emphasis on the new studies’ effects on current practice and understanding of the plastic surgery procedure or trend being discussed. They give a digest version of each paper and discuss its pearls and pitfalls, clinical relevance, and real-world implications. His work in global partnerships with teams in low- and middle-income countries has spanned more than a decade, including collaboration with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health, where he helped build a joint, comprehensive cleft and craniofacial program. He has also led initiatives to expand access to high-quality surgical care in low-resource settings through his clinical practice, research, and global health leadership. Dr. Swanson advances surgical innovation, education, and care delivery across diverse healthcare contexts.

He completed his general surgery residency at Main Line Health Jefferson Health System, followed by his plastic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He then completed a microsurgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in both breast reconstruction, as well as head-to-toe and comprehensive gender affirming operations, including facial surgery, top surgery and bottom surgery, and is widely published in all areas of gender affirmation.

Special guest, Jesse Selber, MD, was most recently the Acting Chair, the Director of Clinical Research and Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Currently, he is a Physician Executive and the Surgery Service Line Chief of Beaumont, where he also serves as Professor of Plastic Surgery. In this role, Dr. Selber is responsible for all surgical activities within the Beaumont System, including 8 hospitals overseeing 2000 surgeons. Dr. Selber completed surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania and fellowship in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Selber's clinical practice is exclusively complex cancer reconstruction. He is a surgical innovator, developing numerous techniques, and author of the only robotic plastic surgery textbook.
